Corruption led to collapse of bridge: Congress

ITANAGAR, Feb 27: Corruption was responsible for the collapse of suspension bridge at Tirbin on February 15 injuring seven people, alleged the District Congress Committee of West Siang district.

Addressing the media persons at Press Club on Monday, West Siang District Congress President Marpin Basar squarely blamed the PWD for poor quality of work leading to the collapse of newly built suspension bridge injuring seven people including a pregnant woman.
Basar demanded the government to suspend the officers involved in the dubious works. He also asked the government to constitute an inquiry committee over the low standard work executed by the contractors and the department resulting in its collapse.
Did the department DPR recommend use of bamboos in the suspension bridge, Basar asked.
One Bajum Boje, a youth of Bege village lodged complaint against the department and contractors with Extra Assistant Commissioner Tirbin on February 18, three days after the incident holding them responsible for the collapse of bridge.
"A free and fair investigation should be conducted so that truth is unearthed and responsible people booked under appropriate section of the law" he said demanding that the government pay compensation to injured people for medical expenses.
Basar also questioned the role of local MLA in ensuring the quality work of the bridge.
Meanwhile, the committee further demanded that local MLA allocate funds from MLALAD to procure vehicle for the Police Outpost in order to make the police outpost at Tirbin functional.

PASIGHAT, Feb 27: Pasighat MLA Kaling Moyong inaugurated the newly constructed drugs addict rehabilitation center at HDS compound, Leprosy colony on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Moyong stated people addicted to drugs often need additional care and assistance which the drug rehabilitation center will provide.

Tirap pay last respect to chief of Kheti P Raja
KHONSA, Feb 27: The last rites of Panwang Raja (Lowang), Paramount Chief of Kheti village, who breathed his last at Dibrugarh on Feb 22 last was performed in a traditional way on Monday.
Born in 1942, the late chief was associated with K A A Raja, the then former Lieutenant Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, when he was serving as VLW but he had to leave his job after his father Late Wangto Lowang died early in 1976 in order to serve as the Chief of Kheti. He donated maximum portion of land to the government for development of Khonsa Township.

Addressing artisans and weavers and members of the NGOs during its inaugural session, NABARD General Manager S Shankaranarayanan said, "There's no dearth of artistic weavers in the state and the entire northeast. The intricate designs and patterns of our weavers are the cynosure at various craft melas and exhibitions across the country, however guidance is required for the artisans to mould and recreate the dresses with the local patterns as per requirement and demand of the markets outside northeast." He assured to conduct trainings in this regard.
"Handlooms in a way are directly connected to the rich tradition and culture of this area.
In every festivity there is a wide display of traditional dresses. Therefore encouraging the weavers directly contributes in preserving the rich culture," he added while assuring to sponsor weavers to participate in craft melas and fairs across the country.
He also emphasized on the need to improve marketing strategies and suggested for brain storming sessions to develop strategies for effective marketing of the end products.
Joint Director, Textiles and Crafts, Hage Tatan suggested for creating a logo for the handloom products from Ziro to give it a brand value adding, "Handmade clothes are in huge demand, what is required is a good marketing."
He further informed that the PM Mudra Yojna, the erstwhile weaver's credit card, will facilitate loans from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakhs.

Don't make Religion a festival barrier: Waii
ITANAGAR, Feb 27: Religion should not become a barrier in celebrating festival, said Home Minister Kumar Waii.

‘AFSPA is no cure for militancy’

ITANAGAR, Feb 27: The All Lower Subansiri Youth Association (ALSYA) has in a complaint letter to the state Chief Secretary claimed that the maintenance work of Potin to Bopi road under TAH, sanctioned under Ministry of MoRTH has not been carried out as per DPR.
Alleging substandard work being carried out, the Association urged the concern authority to conduct an inquiry into the issue by constituting a committee consisting of officers not below the rank of Commissioner and officers from the MoRTH.
It further informed that it had also submitted a representation to the concern authority to complete the land acquisition process within 15 days as it has resulted in inordinate delay in the construction of Trans Arunachal Highway.
The Association has further demanded early completion of land acquisition process, construction of road from Potin to Bopi under TAH, proper renovation of the said road as per DPR and to initiate action against erring officers.
MoU signed between RGU and IIE
ITANAGAR, Feb 27: A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) at Guwahati to mutually work for developing entrepreneurship culture among the youth of North Eastern region.

IMFL seized

Late Taring was former Chairman of Nyokum Lapang Welfare Committee and also stood for ASM for Tudubath Palap Anchal Segment under Chambang Circle is Kra Daadi district. He is survived by his three wives, seven daughters and three sons. The Assembly Youth Congress termed his death as irreparable loss to family as well as the society.

Resolve the issue
The Arunachal bhawan, Mumbai is once again in news for all the wrong reasons. This time the Arunachal Students Union of Mumbai has alleged that US Roofs, the company which has taken land on lease and developed the property including that of bhawan, is trespassing into bhawan. The company is allegedly destroying parts of bhawan and converting it into their office. This has deeply worried those cancer patients who are staying in the bhawan. Mumbai is home to famous Tata Memorial Hospital, which is known for its cancer treatment.
Majority of Arunachalees visit the said hospital for cancer treatment. Therefore it is more important to resolve the issue concerning the Arunachal bhawan. The whole problem started due to mistake committed by the state government. They should have never given the land on lease and should have constructed the bhawan on their own. State government should try to find out a lasting solution and end this imbroglio at the earliest. Most of the people who use Arunachal bhawan, Mumbai are poor cancer patients who can’t afford to stay at the costly hotels. In their interest the state government should take urgent steps to resolve all the outstanding issues.

Value critical minds of the citizens
Dear Editor,
Through a recent edition of this daily, a senior government official had published a tenuous but arduously lengthy justification of how the recently concluded Festival of Arunachal was an immaculate success (Arunachal festival sets benchmark: food fest regains glory dated 25th February, 2017). It is fathomable that it is his duty to uphold the actions of the Government as such however disdainful it might appear to the educated and aware citizen of the 21st century.
This writer does not intend to question the grand success that he has unequivocally purported. Rather, the worrying part is his tedious choice of words to criticize the “critics” who he has ardently tried to portray as naïve and ingenuous.
This writer is of the opinion that critical mindset of the citizen is a sign that
they are aware of what is going on around the society. They are alert, aware and
questioning the authority of “whats” and “whys” of their actions. He has taken the
liberty to declare it himself without whatsoever rational justification that the
festival was absolutely flawless and bewilderingly memorable and that the people
had truly enjoyed it. Before name-
Moreover, he has liberally declared that our state hasn’t yet delivered any artist of the caliber of the Bollywood singers that were brought to perform. This might be true to an extent but does it justify the views he has purported that these Bollywood artists help showcase the potential of our state and enhance its image to the outside world? This writer chooses to differ here. They go and play wherever they are paid excruciatingly high fees for the performances. Just a few days back before playing here, one of these Bollywood singers was performing in Guwahati at a college festival. Did it improve the image of the college or say, Assam? I doubt. It’s their job to play for a high fee. Rather, the same amount of money paid to them may nurture a dozen of local talents here.

One may take pride in one’s roles and duties to uphold the Government policies and actions, but it is rather callous and portrays an air of dictatorial attitude when a governmental official tries to shut the questioning and critical minds of the citizens.
